More Than a Photoshoot: Celebrating Confidence, Courage and Womanhood
A special October photoshoot celebrating three incredible women, rebuilding confidence and reminding every woman that she deserves to feel beautiful.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we come together to raise awareness, share stories, celebrate survivors and remind women of the importance of checking their breasts.
But for me, October is also about something much deeper. It's about the women behind the diagnosis, the journeys they have faced, the changes to their bodies and the confidence that can sometimes be lost along the way.
This October, I wanted to do something a little different through Lady Survivors Mastectomy Swimwear. Something that would make a genuine difference, however small, to three incredible women who are currently going through breast cancer.
I organised a special confidence-boosting photoshoot, bringing three ladies together for a day dedicated entirely to them.
A day to feel beautiful, confident and celebrated
Going through breast cancer can change so much more than your physical health. Surgery, mastectomies, treatment and the emotional journey that comes with a diagnosis can have a huge impact on how you see yourself.
I know this personally, having been diagnosed with breast cancer myself at just 39.
I understand how difficult it can be to look in the mirror and recognise the body looking back at you. How surgery can change your relationship with your femininity, your confidence and the way you feel about yourself.
That's why I wanted these three ladies to have an opportunity to step away from everything they are going through, forget about hospital appointments and treatment for a little while, and simply enjoy being themselves.
With the help of an incredibly talented photographer, Andy Owen, we created a relaxed and supportive environment where the ladies could feel comfortable, celebrated and beautiful.
There were smiles, laughter, a few nerves at the beginning and some truly special moments.
Most importantly, there were three women who deserved to feel amazing.
It's about so much more than what you see in the photographs
The photographs are beautiful, but what matters most to me is what sits behind them.
It's about seeing these women recognise their own beauty again. It's about confidence, self-worth and remembering that a breast cancer diagnosis does not define who you are.
Whether you've had a mastectomy, reconstruction, breast surgery or are still navigating treatment, you are still you.
Your body may look different. Your journey may have changed you. But you have not lost your femininity, your beauty or your right to feel confident.
And that's something I want Lady Survivors to stand for.
Why I started Lady Survivors
Lady Survivors was born from my own experience of breast cancer and the realisation that there was something missing in the fashion industry.
I struggled to find swimwear that made me feel feminine, confident and comfortable after my mastectomy. Much of the specialist swimwear available felt medical rather than fashionable, and I wanted to change that.
I wanted women to have beautiful swimwear that worked with their bodies, whether they had undergone a single or double mastectomy, had reconstruction or chose to remain flat.
But as Lady Survivors has grown, I've realised that this is about so much more than designing and selling swimwear.
It's about creating a community, raising awareness, supporting women and reminding them that they should never feel excluded from fashion because of what they've been through.
A heartfelt thank you
I want to say a huge thank you to our three wonderful ladies for trusting us and being part of this special day. It takes courage to put yourself out there, and I hope you came away feeling as beautiful and amazing as you truly are.
A special thank you to Andy Owen for generously giving his time and talent to capture these moments. Your kindness helped make this day possible.
And finally, to every woman reading this who is going through breast cancer, recovering from surgery or finding her confidence again:
You are more than your diagnosis. You are more than your scars. You are still beautiful, still feminine and still deserving of feeling wonderful in your own skin.
This October, we celebrated three women, but the message is for every woman.
At Lady Survivors, we see you, we celebrate you and we are here for you.
Because life after breast cancer should still be full of confidence, fashion, fun and feeling fabulous.
With love,
Melanie
